uke conflict

Most socialists aren't like this, but it is regrettable how loud these guys are. These "anti-imperialist" socialists who support Russian imperialism are called "campists." Essentially, they take a side in capitalist imperialist conflicts so that they have something to sink their loyalties into because they just can't live their lives without having a "side." This became very common in the 1990s, when real socialism basically died and there were no more truly socialist states to be loyal to except for Cuba (which is horribly irrelevant), starting with socialist worship of the Serbs in the Yugoslav wars because of how NATO opposed them.

These campists ignore the reality that Russia is just another imperialist power trying to bring back its previous role in the world's imperialist paradigm. They just support anything that is even vaguely anti-NATO.

I am also a socialist, but I'm not going to take the "side" of the US or Russia because both sides are imperialist powers. I will support policies that help countries achieve self-determination (such as NATO funding of Ukraine), but I will oppose imperialism on both sides (Russian invasion of Ukraine, US manipulation of Latin American elections, both sides' wars in the Middle East, etc).

Campism is essentially a descendant of Western Stalinist power-worship, and many anti-Stalinist socialists critiqued this refusal to believe that the USSR was an imperialist power during the Cold War. Even Trotsky wrote a full essay on Ukraine alone and how Russian imperialism/chauvinism needed to be stopped. Link here: https://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/1939/04/ukraine.html

stupdpol neutered

There is a smaller sub called r/N_N_N which I really liked because it was a geopolitics focused sub that was more "edgy" without all the typical brainrot. So people would engage in nuanced disagreements and discussions, like how the internet used to be. Didn't matter which side of the political spectrum.

Then fuckshit reddit starting promoting it on Ukraine conflict and World News via the mobile app... And before you know it, the whole sub is now filled with pro-Ukraine talking points.

Thing is, i support Ukraine, I'm all for them. But it's that stupid fucking brainrot type of person who just sits around on forums obsessing over Ukraine only talking in predictable canned responses that drives me nuts. I can't discuss nuanced issues when all the replies are suddenly, "No, Ukrainian warcrimes don't matter! If the invaders don't want to die, they can simply go home!!!!!"

It's just so fucking toxic, and frankly, I'm convinced most of them aren't even human. Just LLMs designed around whatever fucking personality they are trying to shilll

This is my biggest annoyance with the Ukraine stuff. Before the war, during my studies it seemed like Ukraine, while definitely not as blatantly authoritarian as Russia, was still basically a rampantly corrupt mafia state. And now a year later I’m just supposed to accept that they’re these knights in shining armor defending democracy and clap for all these cringe memes showing Zelensky as every member of the Avengers? No thanks

Hope Lukashenko holds onto power, don’t want to see Belarus become another war-torn shithole failed state exploited by globohomo like with what happened to Ukraine

hat’s a bit of an exaggeration isn’t it, Russia doesn’t have anywhere near the capacity or competence to pull off what Germany did. They’re even choking on Ukraine. Their conventional threat to anyone outside their immediate area is negligible.

5/17/2022, 7:44:38 AM

none of that is going to happen and only a deranged ukraine simp would think any of it would

sorry janusz but i’m gonna have to tell your boss you’re simping for ukraine instead of cleaning toilets again

The mod team sees your disapproval and while we are sympathetic to the sentiment that the world sees too much war, and the USA is an outsized contributor to that situation, the soldiers themselves are not in charge of deciding where they go or what wars they engage in. They're just working stiffs who often have no other way to pay for college.

If we removed every photo that dedicated someone who did something shitty... There wouldn't be any photos left. None. Zero. Zilch. Even the furniture came from wood that came from a tree that crowded out a smaller tree in the fight for sunlight.

Support for Ukraine is completely moral and reasonable but this whitewashing you people demand everyone engage in is just asinine

No one's innocent, everyone has done something they don't like, it's just a photo that kinda looks like a painting.

I went to school for IR, worked in politics, follow it from a high level, and cited and argued from the perspective of the west's top Russian diplomatic advisor -- who's entire job is to be the west's leader on research and understanding Russia, so we never make the mistakes again of miscalculating their thought process due to western biases. The top of the food chain the west goes to when they teach diplomats and go to when they need factual realistic insight. He argued that basically, yeah, clearly NATO has been creeping into Russia's sphere of influence, has given Russia reasons to not be trust the west, and the west is ideologically inconsistent based on convenience when it comes to Euro-Russian relations. That even IF you don't personally believe these to be true, which he does, at the very least, this is how Russians genuinely perceives the west.

I was banned, for citing the thoughts of the top western Russian diplomatic academic, for "Spreading Kremlin propaganda."

You're not allowed to speak sense or reason, you need to repeat the propaganda lines or be purged. The west has become everything it pretends it is against.

I guess Kissinger and former heads of the CIA are also propagandists for Russia.

I replied elsewhere. It's not a "But the west is also bad", but a reminder to look deeper into subjects. Often people put on blinders for their own side while overly and unfairly assessing the other side.

For instance, there is mass hysteria over the conflict in Ukraine, almost willing to go into nuclear war over the "integrity of democracy and freedom!" and "Stopping the evil bad guys from expanding" like they are cartoonishly evil and irrational people. But when it's their own side, I'm sure you suddenly can start seeing more nuance... And may say, sheepishly, "Well I mean I dissagree with their actions" but I doubt you're seeing a bunch of VZ flags in people's profile pictures when the US failed a coup a few years ago, or constant non-stop talk about the war in Yemen and all the lives lost because of it.

Hell, many people will suddenly even begin to understand nuance, and argue, "Well the petrodollar keeps the US currency as the global reserve currency. It's in great American interest that the petrodollar remains as is, else it would be not only extremely devastating for the USA, but the global economy which relies on it."

Suddenly people can get more nuanced and understand the complex working parts when the west is doing it... But when the country we have villainized does it, suddenly everyone reverts into maximal virtuous religious defenders. All nuance, complexity, and understanding goes out the window. The profile pictures come up, the mass media concerns of liberty is suddenly an all time high, war is worth it, civilian deaths are unconscionable, etc etc etc....

That if you applied the same amount of nuance you do to your apathetic concern with all the western action literally happening this day, right now, and many more very very recently, to Russia... You may realize that it's more complicated than some cartoonishly bloodthirsty, erratic, and irrational super villain, just going around taking countries arbitrarily because it wants to. That there is more to the story. That states aren't irrational, and are just looking in their self interests.

Put the US in their shoes and remove all the artistic interpretations that frame everyone as good guys and bad guys, and just look at the board. This is a hypothetical just to create some understanding of how perceptions are different: How do you think America would react if Texas exercises it's right as the only state to legally be able to cede from the union, and immediately was in a civil war, and south Texas has decided to partner with China. China is going to come over and actually start putting military bases all over New South Texas... China is also promising that there isn't anything to worry about, that these are "defensive" bases! And this hypothetical China also just so happens to have a long long well established history of breaking promises, lying, and doing whatever is convenient when it benefits their self interests. That they literally can't be trusted.

Do you think the US would just sit by and go, "Hey, that's what New South Texas wants to do! They are free to do so!"

Now obviously this isn't a perfect 1 to 1 comparison, because like everything there are differences... But generally, that's exactly how Russia views this. It's a national security concern. When you can understand WHY you'd feel the way you do in that hypothetical, you can start more accurately start to see how Russian's view their reality, and why 75% of the population support the conflict. It's not because they are stupid dumb easterners (Unlike our propaganda free enlightened western-kin)./

Yeah, it's not like the west has a history of geopolitical maneuvering for access to energy reserves.

Everyone knows this. Why do people always need go to "but the West is also bad". What is the point?

duffmanhb-10 points29 days ago

No one actually thinks it's about Denazification. That's some passing line Putin made a few times in long speeches, that the west targeted and amplified to make it seem like that's what it was all about.

Ukraine conflict  reddit aoc thing I'm still for cutting spending, but that is because the US has such a high military budget that it could basically fight WW3 and easily win if nukes didn't exist. Since nukes exist, the US should downscale to having enough to fight normal wars and fund countries like Ukraine.

Russia has controlled Crimea since 2014. Acknowledging reality doesn’t make one pro-Russia.

More to the point, do you think Corbyn made that image, or even knew or noticed the choice of which color to make Crimea?
